Animating A Rigged Character In Blender

Introduction

Blender is a powerful software package that can be used for 3D animation, modelling, rendering, and more. It is free and open source, meaning anyone can download and use it. In this tutorial, we will be looking at how to animate a rigged character in Blender. We will be using the free and open source Rigify add-on to rig our character and then animate it. This tutorial is aimed at users who have some experience with Blender but are new to animation.

Rigging the Character

The first step in animating a character is rigging it. Rigging is the process of creating a “skeleton” that can be used to deform and move the character. The Rigify add-on is a great way to quickly rig a character. To use Rigify, first create your character mesh and UV unwrap it. Then select the mesh and go to the add-ons tab in the properties panel. Enable the Rigify add-on and click the “Generate” button. This will create a rig for your character.

Adding Constraints

The next step is to add constraints to the rig. Constraints are used to limit the movement of the character’s bones. For example, you can add a “Limit Rotation” constraint to limit the rotation of a bone to a certain range. You can also add a “Copy Location” constraint to copy the location of another object. Adding constraints to the rig will help you keep the character’s movements realistic and within a certain range.

Adding Bones

You may also want to add additional bones to the rig. This is particularly useful if you want to add facial expressions or other secondary motion to the character. To add a bone, first select the mesh and go to the add-ons tab in the properties panel. Enable the “Add Bones” add-on and click the “Create” button. This will bring up a menu where you can select the type of bone you want to create. You can then add the bone to the rig by selecting the bone and clicking the “Add” button.

Animating the Character

Once you have rigged and constrained the character, you can begin animating it. To animate a character, you will need to create keyframes for each part of the character. For example, if you want to make the character wave, you will need to create a keyframe for the arm, the hand, and the fingers. You can also add additional keyframes for facial expressions or other secondary motion. Once you have created all of the keyframes, you can move them around to create the animation.

Adding Motion Blur

Motion blur is a great way to make your animation look more realistic. Motion blur is the blurring of the image that occurs when an object moves quickly. To add motion blur to your animation, first select the character’s rig and go to the “Render” tab in the properties panel. Enable the “Motion Blur” option and adjust the settings to your liking. This will add a realistic blur to your animation.

Rendering the Animation

The last step is to render the animation. To render the animation, first select the character’s rig and go to the “Render” tab in the properties panel. Set the frame range to the range of frames you want to render. Then click the “Render Animation” button. This will render the animation and save it as a video file. You can then upload the video file to YouTube or other video hosting sites.
